A roof top tent on a Suzuki Jimny is only safe if the tent plus the rack weigh less than the Jimny's roof load limit while driving, and that limit is small. Suzuki Australia does not publish a roof load figure on its Jimny specifications page (checked 20 Oct 2026), so get it from your owner's manual or a Suzuki dealer before you buy any tent.
We will be straight with you: the RIGDUP Nomad 1.4M weighs 72 kg before you add a rack. On many Jimny roof setups that may be too heavy to carry while driving, so unless your manual and your rack maker both clear it in writing, do not put it on the roof. This guide shows how to check your numbers and what to do instead, including a trailer.
Can You Put a Roof Top Tent on a Suzuki Jimny?
You can put a light roof top tent on a Jimny only if the roof and the rack are both rated for it. The Jimny is a small, light 4WD with a short wheelbase, and its roof was not designed around a heavy tent.
Three things decide it:
- The vehicle's dynamic roof load. The most Suzuki allows on the roof while driving. It is in your owner's manual.
- The rack's dynamic rating. The most the rack maker allows on that rack while driving, for a Jimny.
- The tent's weight plus the rack's weight. Both count against the limit.
Use whichever rating is lower. If the tent plus the rack is over it, the tent does not go on the roof. There is no workaround for that.
What Is the Roof Load Limit on a Suzuki Jimny?
The figure that counts is the one in your Jimny's owner's manual, and we could not confirm it on Suzuki Australia's site. Suzuki Australia's Jimny specifications page lists kerb weight, gross vehicle weight and towing limits, but no roof load (checked 20 Oct 2026). Its Jimny accessories page sells a genuine roof rack kit, but lists no kg rating for it either (checked 20 Oct 2026).
So we are not going to guess a number. Figures you see quoted online for the Jimny vary a lot, and some are for older models, other countries or a rack rather than the roof. Find your real figure here:
- Your owner's manual. Look in the loading, roof rack or specifications section.
- A Suzuki dealer. Ask for the dynamic roof load for your exact model and year, in writing.
- The rack maker's fit guide. Rack makers such as Rhino-Rack, Front Runner and Rola often list a rating for each rack on each vehicle.
Then take off the rack's own weight. What is left is all you can put on the roof while driving.
Is the RIGDUP Nomad 1.4M Too Heavy for a Jimny?
It may well be, but only your own numbers can say. The Nomad 1.4M weighs 72 kg on its own. Add a rack and you are well past 72 kg before anything else goes up there.
Do this sum with your own numbers:
| Step | Your number |
|---|---|
| Jimny dynamic roof load (owner's manual) | A |
| Rack dynamic rating for a Jimny (rack maker) | B |
| Your limit: the lower of A and B | C |
| Take off the rack's weight | C minus rack |
| Take off the Nomad 1.4M | Minus 72 kg |
| What is left | Must be zero or more |
If the answer is below zero, the Nomad 1.4M is the wrong tent for your Jimny's roof. Please do not fit it anyway. Going over the dynamic limit can damage the roof and rack and makes the car less stable, and that is not a risk worth taking for a tent.
If you are not sure, ask a rack maker for a Jimny rack rated for 72 kg plus the rack while driving. If none of them will put that in writing, you have your answer.
Will a Roof Top Tent Fit the Size of a Jimny Roof?
Size is the second problem. The Nomad 1.4M is 217 cm long and 150 cm wide closed. Suzuki lists the Jimny 3 door at 3,650 mm long and 1,645 mm wide, and the Jimny XL at 3,965 mm long and the same width (checked 20 Oct 2026).
That means:
- Width. A 150 cm tent covers most of the Jimny's width, so it sits close to the edges of the roof.
- Length. A 217 cm tent may hang over the windscreen or the back on a 3 door. Measure your roof and rack before you buy any tent.
- Height. The closed Nomad is 18 cm tall. Add your rack height to Suzuki's listed 1,720 mm (3 door) or 1,725 mm (XL) to know your total height.
A big overhang catches more wind and puts more strain on the front of the rack. A smaller, lighter tent will fit a Jimny roof better.
How Does a Roof Top Tent Affect Jimny Handling and Payload?
Weight up high makes a tall, narrow, short wheelbase car feel less settled in crosswinds, corners and off camber tracks. The Jimny's 2,250 mm wheelbase (3 door) is short, so it feels extra weight on the roof more than a big ute would.
Payload is tight too. Suzuki lists the Jimny 3 door manual at a 1,095 kg minimum kerb weight and 1,450 kg gross vehicle weight (checked 20 Oct 2026). That leaves roughly 355 kg for people, gear, accessories, the rack and any tent. Your own figure depends on your variant and accessories, so weigh your car or check the manual.
Two adults, camping gear and water use up that payload fast. A tent and rack on top can leave very little room. Our guide to roof rack weight limits for roof top tents explains the dynamic and static checks in more detail.
What Are the Options if a Roof Top Tent Is Too Heavy for Your Jimny?
A small trailer, a lighter tent or a ground tent are the three real options. Pick the one that fits how you travel.
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Roof top tent on a small trailer | Keeping a hardshell without loading the Jimny's roof | Trailer payload and ball weight, Jimny towing limits, tight tracks |
| Lighter roof top tent | Staying on the roof if your rating allows it | Tent plus rack must still fit under the dynamic limit |
| Ground tent or swag | Saving weight and money | Slower to set up, sleeping on the ground |
Put the Tent on a Trailer
A trailer takes the tent off the Jimny's roof completely. Suzuki lists the Jimny's towing limits at 1,300 kg braked and 350 kg unbraked (checked 20 Oct 2026). A small trailer with a load-rated rack can carry a hardshell, and you can leave camp set up while you take the Jimny exploring. Check the trailer's ATM and payload, the rack rating, the ball weight limit in your manual, and the towing rules with your state transport authority.
Look at a Lighter Tent
If your roof and rack ratings leave enough room, a lighter tent may work. Our guide to the lightest roof top tents for Australian cars compares weights. Even a light tent has to pass the same sum.
Use a Ground Tent or Swag
A ground tent or swag adds no roof load at all and packs inside the car. Our roof top tent vs ground tent guide lays out the trade offs.
FAQs
Does Suzuki make a roof rack for the Jimny?
Yes. Suzuki Australia lists a genuine Jimny roof rack kit that fits the Jimny Lite, Jimny and Jimny XL. Its accessories page did not show a load rating when we checked on 20 Oct 2026, so ask your dealer for it.
Is the Jimny XL better for a roof top tent?
The XL is longer, with a 2,590 mm wheelbase and a 1,545 kg gross vehicle weight, per Suzuki's specifications page (checked 20 Oct 2026). A longer roof may fit a tent better, but the roof load limit still decides it. Check the XL's figure in its own manual.
Can I sleep in a roof top tent on a Jimny if it is under the static limit?
The static limit at camp is usually higher than the dynamic limit, but you still have to drive there. If the tent and rack are over the dynamic limit, it should not be on the roof at all.
Will a roof top tent void my Jimny warranty?
Ask Suzuki or your dealer. Damage from loading the roof past its rating may not be covered.
Does RIGDUP sell a Jimny roof rack?
No. RIGDUP does not sell roof racks. Talk to a rack maker that lists a rating for your Jimny.
Thinking About a Trailer Setup?
If your Jimny's roof cannot carry a 72 kg tent, a trailer can. Once your trailer's rack rating and payload check out, see the RIGDUP Nomad 1.4M roof top tent for its full specs and what comes in the box.
